City University
Our wood carvers frequently collaborate with fine furniture designers and makers to create bespoke one-off pieces for institutions and private clients.
This ceremonial kneeling stool is specially designed for City University graduation ceremonies which are held at Guildhall, City of London.
The main carved element is the university’s Coat of Arms. This heraldic sculpture is carved in limewood and gessoed to prepare the ground for the polychromy and gilding process. The elaborately carved mantling, crest and the ribbon for the motto are gilded with 23 & ½ carat gold leaf, and the helm is gilded with palladium leaf.
Other carved elements include:
- Foliage carving set on the side panels of the stool. This design is inspired by historical carving elements from Guildhall, London, where the ceremonies are held.
- Incised letter carving (A GIFT FROM THE BAGARI FOUNDATION) on the back of the stool.
